For over a year, Seymour High School has been the site of vast construction. This year, one of the biggest additions has been finished, as a whole new cafeteria is open to serve staff and students. Included with the new cafeteria is an overhaul of the menu, as students are no longer limited to the one entrée that is chosen for the day. Instead, students will be given the choice among five different cuisine options at the 2nd Street Cafe. Also opened is The Night Owl, a breakfast cafe that serves fruit smoothies, grab-and-go breakfast foods, and coffee. Wait times have been greatly reduced as a result of the changes, which is likely to improve the overall opinion on the school’s lunches.
Not only has a new cafeteria been added to the school, but also has a whole new hallway for the English classes. Many rooms throughout the school have been renovated or given new positions and room numbers, and new classrooms are being developed at all times. New areas for the band and choir are being built, as well as a new special education outdoor area between the 100 and 300 wings.
Furthermore, many classrooms have been either relocated or given different numbers, as the growth of the school building continues to change nearly everything about Seymour High School. For example, the 100 rooms are now in the new front hallway, which is reserved for English classes and student services. Some math classes have been moved upstairs from the 300 hallway, and health classes will take place in the upstairs area of the commons.
No one can deny that the construction makes many aspects of Seymour High School difficult, but after it is all said and done, our school and community will be changed for the better. Seymour Vice Principal Steve Bush believes the construction will improve the school experience: “Our student population has reached an all-time high and the extra classroom space allows us to keep class sizes down and support all educational needs.” Also, when asked about the timeline of the construction and its future parts, Bush shares that “New classrooms, renovated classrooms, and new Academy spaces highlight this part of the project. A huge multi-purpose room will be created where our current band and choir rooms are currently located. We expect to have all of these spaces available to us to begin the 2024-25 school year.”
The students at Seymour High School quickly adapted to the new changes in their school. The new cafeteria has already become a hot spot for club meetings and school-wide events. The Fellowship of Christian Students uses the space for their meetings, and the community can rent the cafeteria space for events open to the public. As much as the construction can seem confusing to students, it is already serving its purpose of making Seymour High School and the community of Seymour a more welcoming place.
