On Friday, 9/29, the Seymour Owls won their IHSAA Sectional against Brownstown. The Owls defeated the Braves by a score of 3-2. The fans were loud, and both teams played great. It was a nail-biting match that came down to the wire, but the Owls got the job done.
The Owls had two seniors on the court Friday night. Senior Joe Schmidt won easily, winning 3-0 in a No. 1 singles match. The other senior, Drew Handloser also had a great day, winning a No. 2 double 2-0.
It all came down to the final No. 2 singles of the match. Junior Parker Thompson had to play against Brownstown’s Pierson Wheeler, who had a 39-match win streak entering the day. After losing the first set 6-7, something clicked for Thompson, winning the next three sets and helping Seymour defend their sectional title.
Seymour Tennis has been strong the entire season, beating teams left and right. They currently have a 17-4 record, and they are hoping to add a few more wins. Coach Hunt has really coached this team well. He has built a new standard for this program, adding a mix of competitiveness and still being able to have fun. The Owls have been one of the best teams in the state for the last five years, and that doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon.
The Owls will play Columbus North on Tuesday, Oct 3rd. It will be a big game for the Owls, who will try to pull off the “upset” to stay alive. Thanks to all the fans for supporting the Owls through everything this season, and let’s cheer them on for the finishing stretch. Owls Will.
