Thor: Ragnarok is hands-down one of the best movies of 2017, something that’s not very surprising considering it is a Marvel movie, and it came out the same year as the Emoji Movie.

The movie’s plot is that Thor, Loki, Hulk, and a new character Valkyrie, played by Tessa Thompson (ft. Westworld), all star in a buddy-cop movie to stop the Norse apocalypse Ragnarok from happening. When Odin dies on Earth after being exiled there by Loki during the aftermath of Thor 2: The Dark World. The goddess of death, Hela, returns to Asgard to claim the throne as she is apparently Odin’s eldest child and his rightful heir. As Hela is way more powerful than Thor or Loki, the two escape and must put together a team to go retake Asgard and stop Ragnarok from happening… The ending wasn’t really done well.

But you know what IS done really well? The characters.

This movie didn’t focus on the plot and it instead focused on the characters, their motivations, and their revelations from their adventure and that’s what made this movie great. Thor, after the loss of his hammer, grows more as a person as he is able to finally see that he was not beholden to his assigned role. He realizes that destiny is not reality, and by the end of the movie he is able to finally understand Loki and accept his (Loki’s) nature.

Loki is fleshed out even more by being portrayed as less of a diabolic villain as he was shown in “The Avengers” (2012), and being portrayed as a more human and layered character, with him constantly joking around.

Thor Ragnarok is in no way a “plot-heavy” movie, but if you’re looking for two hours of dumb fun, this is the movie for you!
