Jackson County Visitor Center
November 21, 2017
Have you ever wanted to learn more about the history of Seymour? If your answer is yes, then you should visit the Jackson County Visitors Center. The visitor center has been in Seymour since 2007. As one walks through their collection of railroad robberies and John Mellencamp memorabilia, he or she can learn so much about how Seymour became the little town it is. Some may think Seymour’s just another little town with no cool things to know about or to see, but it actually is a very interesting.
The building itself was built in 1890 and used for the railroad. Then in 1960 Jay C foods owned the building which was given to the city county government. After the city county government took over, they began the remodel. The museum doesn’t get many visitors except during big festivals or busy times like the Oktoberfest. During the festivals they normally get about 23 people per day. It took 6 months to bring in all the props that they have now. There is not only history inside the building but there’s history about the building itself.
There are also other attractions like Freeman Field Army Airfield Museum and the Fort Vallonia Museum. These are places where residents and visitors can also learn about Seymour and Jackson County. Art lovers will enjoy visits to Jackson County’s diverse artistic collections. Seeing all the art will allows visitors to get a sense of how art has changed over the years, and to experience history.
