Since December 21st, the Edmonton Oilers had been on a 16-game winning streak. The Oilers were tied in 2nd for most consecutive wins and had the chance to tie for number one with a win against the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday, February 6th in Vegas. The Oilers had done quick work of the predators 4-1 in their previous game and were looking unstoppable. On the other hand, the Golden Knights had just come off an upsetting loss 5-2 to the Detroit Redwings. Things were looking good for the Oilers as they were even predicted to win the game.
Period 1
The game started well for the Oilers as Connor McDavid, the best player in the NHL scored in the 4th minute to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead. The Oilers had most of the momentum, but there were some moments where Vegas took some of the momentum away. Both teams had plenty of shots, but both teams were finding it difficult to get it into the back of the net. Then, with fewer than 2 minutes left in the first period, Nicolas Royal made a backhanded goal to tie the game up 1-1. At the end of the 1st period, both teams went into the first intermission with 1 goal each.
Period 2
The second period started strong for the Golden Knights as they had all the momentum in the first minute. Then, the momentum swayed back to the Oilers, but their shots kept getting saved by Vegas’ Goalie Adin Hill. In the 6th, minute the Oilers got a power play after Vegas’ Kaedan Korczak was called for slashing but, unfortunately, the Oilers couldn’t take advantage of the power play. A couple of minutes later Vegas got a power play of their own after Warren Foegle got called for holding the stick against Nicolas Hague. Vegas, just like the Oilers, wasn’t able to take advantage of the power play though. After the power plays, both teams had their chances to score, but the goalies on both sides prevented anything. At the end of the second Period, both teams were still tied at 1-1.
Period 3
Just one minute into the 3rd period, Chandler Stephenson scored a beautiful goal giving Vegas the lead. Even though they were trailing 1-2, the Oilers didn’t give up. The Oilers kept shooting at the goal, but Adin Hill became a brick wall and stopped every single shot! As time wound down, it was clear that the Oilers wouldn’t be making history, but as the final nail to the coffin, Vegas’ William Karlson scored in the 19th minute. The game ended 3-1 in favor of the Golden Knights. Vegas’ Adin Hill stopped a total of 30 shots against the Oilers!
Even though the Oilers didn’t make history, don’t forget that they had been unstoppable for 16 games straight. There are still 36 games left for the Oilers to play, so for all we know the Oilers could go on to revive their winning streak, win 18 in a row, and beat the 1992-1993 Penguin’s record. Anything is possible for a team with Connor McDavid!
