Friday night was the season opener for the Seymour Owls, and they did not disappoint. The Owls have not won a season opener since 2019 and haven’t beaten Greenwood since 2001. All odds were stacked against the Owls.
After going down 7-0 in the first two minutes of the game, the Owls were ready to show Greenwood what they are made of. Only 2 minutes later, senior Jaylan Johnson would catch a touchdown pass from senior QB Mikey Wright, but they would end up missing the PAT, making the score 6-7.
Greenwood would score another rushing touchdown to make the score 13-6, but just like the Owls, they would miss the PAT. With seven minutes left in the 2nd quarter, senior Nicholas Wheeler would rush for a 1-yard touchdown to make the score 12-13, but instead of kicking the PAT, the Owls would complete a two-point conversion to take the lead and make the score 14-13.
With three minutes left in the 2nd half, junior Bradyn Riley would block a Greenwood punt and give Seymour the ball on the Greenwood 12-yard line. Only two minutes later, senior QB Mikey Wright would rush for a 1-yard touchdown to make the score 20-13, but the Owls would fail the two-point conversion.
With three minutes left in the 4th quarter, junior Adrian Medina would drill a 33-yard field goal to make the score 23-13. That field goal would end up being very important, with Greenwood scoring a touchdown two minutes later, making the score 23-20. It all came down to an onside kick with one minute left, where senior Jaylan Johnson ended up recovering the ball, leading to the Owls kneeling the ball down and ending the game.
Players of The Game: Jaylan Johnson, Bradyn Riley, Nicholas Wheeler, and Mikey Wright.
