Imagine walking back into your high school, not as a student, but as a teacher. For many recent Seymour High School graduates, this dream has become a reality. The educators are eager to return to the community that helped shape who they are today. Mr. Michael Knecht, Class of 2018, wanted to help build the culture at SHS: “I have always wanted to help build the school culture that we have here at SHS. There is nothing like being an Owl. I have always been a part of this city and this school. The people truly make this place great and I wanted to continue that for my students.” The amazing facility at SHS also made the new teachers feel welcome. Ms. Kylie Nowling, a 2021 graduate, felt this after her student teaching: “I knew that if I came back to SHS to teach that I would have supportive colleagues and be in a positive teaching environment.”
The facility at the high school influenced their decision, but also the school corporation. Mr. Alan Perry, Class of 2018, found there is no place like Seymour: “I knew SHS was a strong option for me after seeing some of the opportunities at other school corporations. I was exposed to four or five other places while being in college. None of them matched the vibe that I got from Seymour. This corporation is one of the best. ” Seymour Community Schools have a dedicated facility, a supportive community, and a rich learning environment. Mr. Knecht loves waking up to come to work every day. “There is never a day that I wake up and wish I wasn’t going to work. That’s when you know you are working at the right place.” Seymour Community Schools exposed them to an excellent learning environment and is now exposing them to a great working experience.
Graduates love the diverse environment centered around SHS. Seymour High School offers a wide spread of classes and extracurricular activities. 1995 graduate Ms. Carrie Miller’s favorite part about teaching is “watching an “ah-ha” moment when a student is able to solve a problem on their own or watching someone shine doing what they love (art, robotics, sports, theater, etc.).” SHS allowed the graduates and current students to find an area that they loved: sports, clubs, and relationships.
Graduating from Seymour High School allows the teachers to understand the challenges students face. They love to get to know their students and watch them grow into future leaders. Mrs. Lindsey Peters, a 2013 graduate, loves this experience.”My favorite part is building relationships with students and watching them grow—not just academically but as people. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them gain confidence, find their passions, and take their next steps in life.” Having the ability to build a relationship with students allows students to feel important and valued in the classroom.
The construction of the building changed, but the pride of being an owl will never change. When former students return to their high school as teachers, it creates a unique bridge between generations. They bring a new perspective and commitment to their educator roles. They are inspiring the next generation to come back to Seymour High School as educators. Let us celebrate the dedicated individuals who choose to continue to impact their communities!
