The Owls finished their swimming season on February 28th at the IU Natatorium, competing in the 200-yard freestyle relay at the IHSAA state meet. The group of Lane Mellencamp, Will Proffer, Mason Williams, and Colin Hartung finished 25th/32 with a time of 1:29.58 in the event. Carmel won the event swimming 1:21.64.
Before their state run, Owls’ Swimming and Diving had a record-setting season by going undefeated, 17-0, and placing 3rd in the HHC Conference meet. The 200-yard freestyle relay finished first at the HHC Conference meet and set a school record of 1:38.44. The group edged Floyd Central by five hundredths of a second and advanced to the state finals with the nailbiting performance. The previous record was set in 2022 when Paul Montgomery, Will Cottrill, Clay Greenawalt, and Pedro Cerino set the pace at 1:38.51 and went to state in two events: 200 and 400 free relays. Records are made to be broken.
In the Floyd Central Sectional, Seymour’s Brody Bowles and Cole Simmons advanced to the Jasper Diving Regional, where Cole finished 14th, his best finish. Last year, Simmons placed 16th. Considering Cole began diving only four years earlier, his progress was impressive. Unfortunately, senior diver JJ Myers could not compete due to an injury.
Simmons, a senior, went back for his second-straight season to the regional.
