A four-inch water line ruptured in the maintenance closet near the middle stairwell at Seymour High School on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at approximately 5:45 AM. The water line ruptured from being compromised by city and school officials turning it on and off many times due to construction on Community and 2nd Street. Kaitlyn Ude, an SHS counselor, discovered the burst pipe around 8:30 AM and alerted the staff and administration.
Mrs. Ude was initially there to give a tour to the class of 1975. When staff and administrators arrived at the school, approximately 100,000 square feet of the building was submerged in 1 to 2 inches of water. Together, Mrs. Ude, Mrs. Cathy Reasoner, custodians, and administrators rushed to prevent further damage to the school. Even with all the help and all of their efforts, they still needed the professional help of ServPro to get the school cleaned up before the start of the school year.
ServPro, a cleanup and restoration company that is available 24/7, brought in workers from across the country to assist in the cleanup. They brought advanced drying equipment and moisture detection systems. ServPro continues to be at the school trying to detect any hidden moisture throughout the building.
When Zachariah Uthoff, a staff writer for The Owl, interviewed Principal Steve Bush, he found out that SHS plans to be more aware of the weathering of the pipes and be more active when even the smallest beginnings of a danger are showing. Mrs. Ude added, “I am thankful we were able to respond so quickly,” otherwise, the damage would have been much worse.
