The musical for SHS this year was Into the Woods, the story envelopes the tales of “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Rapunzel”, and “Cinderella,” plus many more added characters. There is a quest that the Baker and his Wife have to endure in the woods. There is suspense, love, heartbreak, and a primary lesson throughout the entire show. The students of SHS participated in the production performed April 5th, 6th & 7th. The 7th of April, there was a special Family Matinee event that only included the first act of the musical later followed by a meet & greet with the characters. Many weeks of daily practice and preparation led up to a show experienced by SHS students, SHS teachers and family members.

The show showed many kinds of symbolism throughout the costumes, set designs and music. The crowd was full of cackles, gasps and curiosity as each scene of the musical passed. The humour in the show was positive reinforcement for the students on stage.

In a recent interview with Kelsey Baker (Baker’s Wife) she answered further questions about the musical.

Q: What was your favourite part about performing in the musical?

Q: Would you like to perform in another musical in the future?

A: More than life! Musicals are where my heart is.

Q: If you could play any other character in the musical what character would you be?

A: The Witch! I think that character has potential to go several different ways.

It is clear that the cast members that were on stage truly enjoyed performing Into the Woods, however, not only the ones on stage participated. There were many who were hidden or participated behind the scenes.  In a recent interview with Bailee Wolfe (1st French Horn in the pit orchestra) she answered further questions about the musical.

Q: What was your favourite part about performing in the musical?

A: I enjoyed getting to be a part of the process start to finish and seeing how far it came from the first rehearsal.

Q: Would you like to perform in another musical in the future?

A: Yes, it was a lot of fun.

Q: If you could choose, what musical would you like to see SHS perform next?

A: I would like to see West Side Story.

Overall the musical appeared to be a success according to the cast and audience. “It was produced well, I’m glad I got to come out and see it!” said Tania Hernandez, a student that attended the afternoon showing on April 7th. The musical has come and passed, however, there is always time to schedule time next year for another musical!
