Opinion: “Avengers: Infinity War” Review *SPOILERS*
May 15, 2018
BY THE WAY THIS IS A SPOILER REVIEW. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
I saw “Infinity War” a week ago on opening night and I’ve got to say that Marvel’s version of “Justice League” is by far the best comic book movie I’ve seen out of the degenerate gene pool that is this genre.
I’ll start with what was great about this film. “Infinity War” is the greatest crossover event since the “Jimmy Timmy Power Hour” event on Nickelodeon and for good reason. Marvel has perfected the formula for crossovers and have managed to include 40 different characters from various films in the last ten years without making the film feel bloated or nonsensical. The plot was very fast-paced yet also fleshed-out enough for the general audience to be able to follow fairly easily, and the villain’s motivations were clear from the beginning and were expanded on even more later in the film. The film has also managed to break out of its genre’s stigma of “geekiness,” allowing for the mass audiences to enjoy this film; this aspect of the film was more or less enhanced and made possible by the direction of the Russo brothers. The Russo brothers went with a darker script for this movie, making the film unique in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) lineup, killing off arguably one of the most iconic villains in the MCU, Loki, before the title sequence and more than half the main and supporting cast by the end of the movie.
But the best part of this movie was its villain; Thanos was amazing. His character was powerful, defeating both Thor and the Hulk with relative ease. He was imposing, creating genuine stakes that previously never existed in the MCU. Most importantly, he was WINNING. “Infinity War” is less an Avengers movie but more of a Thanos movie as the movie follows Thanos’ adventure in annihilating the MCU in three hours.
However, no movie is without flaw. The Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo, was extremely inconsistent both in this movie and the entire MCU so far. In some movies, he can control his transformation but in others he fights for control. There just is no consistency to his character. Also, the music was noticeably odd in this movie due to the usage of temp tracks (existing music put in the movie by a director to influence the mood or feel of a scene). The problem is that “Infinity War” used WAY too popular music for its temp tracks as per usual, such as the Stark “Winterfell” theme after everyone dies. Seriously, go watch that scene and then listen to the “Winterfell” theme. They are the same song.
All in all, “Infinity War” was a stellar film with great action and lots of fun moments! A solid 8/10!
