While kids roamed neighborhoods on Halloween night searching for candy, groups of kids from SHS went house-to-house looking for canned goods and non-perishable items for the Anchor House. “Trick or Treat for Canned Goods” is a yearly volunteer project set up by the Key Club. Over 60 people helped out in the project this year including FFA, Baseball,  Theater, and Key Club.

Despite the downpour of rain, this year was very successful. Last year, 936 items were collected and this year’s goal of 2000 was surpassed with 2007 items collected in total.

Key Club president Tori Gray had this to say about the project, “It was amazing to see how well we did this year as well as all the compliments we received. This is what Key Club stands for, and I am proud that we could include other groups in on this mission as well.”

Kourtney Otte, an FFA member stated, “I had such an amazing time bonding with my friends while supporting the community. I never thought a group of teens could collect such an expanse of food, but we did!”

Tim Perry, a baseball coach as well as teacher at SHS, summed it up by saying, “Even though the weather was awful, we persevered and were able to collect some food for Anchor House.”

It is especially important during the holiday season to give to those in need, which is exactly what the Anchor House does. Projects like “Trick or Treat for Canned Goods” are extremely valuable, but individual donations go far. The Anchor House takes donations Monday-Friday a 250 S Vine ST, Seymour IN.
