The small town of Atlanta, Indiana is a paranormal hotspot

Nearly 50 miles north of Indianapolis, the small town of Atlanta is teeming with paranormal activity, but why? It seems unusual that such a close-knit community has hundreds of stories about local haunts and urban legends.

Roads Hotel

Built in the late 1800s, the Roads Hotel was intended to be a resting point for travelers, specifically due to the peak of industrialization between Indianapolis and Chicago. Death became a hallmark of the home, which is one of the primary influences towards its dark reputation. One of the Roads children, Everett, died in the home after contracting Tuberculosis, which was very common in the late 1800s-mid 1900s. There is also a rumor sprinkled in that a pastor committed suicide in one of the bedrooms at some point near the hotel’s original establishment.

After the death of the owners, the hotel was transformed into a brothel with a sizable number of outlaws and gang activity accompanying it. The infamous Al Capone is said to have visited the Roads Hotel on multiple occasions. With several deaths happening in the home, combined with the hotel’s controversial reputation, it’s no surprise that rumors about hauntings have surfaced.

Asher Walton House

While the most popular, the Roads Hotel is not the only paranormal destination in this small Indiana town. The Asher Walton House is also notorious for its paranormal activity and unexplainable occurrences. Asher Walton was nothing short of a romantic, who built the house as a gift to his wife, Julia, in the style she desired. Both Asher and Julia are said to haunt the home, and a ghostly woman, thought to be the spirit of Julia, is seen often throughout the home. One of their younger children also died at an early age in the home, making it classified as haunted by paranormal enthusiasts.

Whether or not the ghosts of gangsters or a devoted couple haunt these homes, they are still truly fascinating to investigate and are remarkable pieces of history.
