Has anyone ever said to older family members and friends that they heard about a Tik Tok video and then they react like they are hearing a whole new language? Well, they kind of are. Tik Tok is a super popular app all over the world, especially with teenagers and college students. The app is for video sharing, which can range from dancing, cooking, jokes, and so much more. This social media app has been a place where gen Z has created a world of their own including their own language! 

Through video sharing, the people using the app often become familiar with a popular sound that was used in a viral video. From there the sound is used over and over by millions of people to convey a message through the sound. These “sounds” are then incorporated into the language that is used in everyday language by gen Z. Then over a very short period of time they go viral and all of a sudden half the world has created something new.

It all started as some may recall as Musical.ly, and then ByteDance, a chinese technology company that produced these apps, changed the name back in 2016 to Tik Tok and also changed the content.  Ever since then Tik Tok has grown exponentially with over 1 billion users as of 2022. Tik Tok has many headquarters all over the world, not just in the US, such as India, South Korea, and many other countries. This app is worldwide and is making huge changes in our lives every single day. 

Most people see this app as a fun place to watch videos when you’re bored. Although this is very true, it is so much more than that. Moms, dads, grandmas, and even dogs can make a stable living from posting content everyday and having a high number of followers. The ages for these content creators are ranging from 20’s to even late 40’s. So next time there is talk about Tik Tok by friends or family keep the ‘Tik Tok Talk’ in mind.
