Floyd Sanders, a once controversial man and boxer, wants to start a club to keep kids off drugs and stay off the streets.
Sanders was a professional fighter back in the 1970s. He had fought in multiple amateur and professional matches. He fought on live television against Marvin Johnson on ESPN and had fought on Joe Frazier’s card. He has been inducted into the Brownstown Hall of Fame and wants to credit his success to Columbus native Dale Spears who had helped him build his career.
“I worked with a lot of good trainers,” Sanders said. “Dale Spears was one of the best. We had one good relationship. He was a good man, and he helped me get to where I am today.” Their relationship had expanded outside the Boxing Ring as well. They would hang out at the Bartholomew County fair and talk, about boxing mostly, but also about their lives.
They would train every single day for 5 to 6 hours together. Sanders credits everything he learned to Spears and thanks him for his actions. Spears traveled as far as West Virginia with Sanders and other boxers he had trained. Sanders has been recognized by an Olympic trainer after beating 5 boxers on a trip Spears took him on.
Sanders with the experience and skills he had gained wants to help and train kids from the age of 10 and up male or female to stay off drugs and not go down the path he had. Sanders has been fighting his demons and turned his life around to help kids fight theirs with boxing.” I want to start a boxing club to give the kids something to do to keep them away from drugs,” Sanders has stated.
Sanders has said he feels there is an interest in boxing in Jackson County and encourages people to contact him if they are so interested. He has said that all he needs is help to find a building that is suitable as a gym and holds a ring, he also needs help with getting equipment such as gloves, shoes, and headgear.
If you want to get into contact with Sanders you can contact the number 812-341-5690.

I love Floyd!! He has been a part of our family as far back as I can remember!! I absolutely love this ideal! My son and I have recently talked about finding somewhere for my grandson to take boxing lessons! I remember my grandfather being a boxer and having my uncle box as well. Him and Floyd were great friends! I’ve always loved and respected Floyd and consider him as an uncle! Way to go uncle Floyd, I can’t wait to see you get this up and going!
Blessings,
