Jazzing Things Up

Anna Massengale, Staff Writer

On November 16, twenty five Seymour band members performed a jazz concert for the first time since last year. The band performed seven songs with at least one solo in each. The songs performed include: “Alamode” by Curtis Fuller, “Minor Episode” by John Dikey, “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music by Richard Rodgers, “Night Flower” by Sammy Nestico, “Gumbo Caliente” by Doug Beach, “Frankenstein” by Edgar Winter and “The Blues Walk” by Clifford Brown. Solo performers include but aren’t limited to Senior Morgan Boas, Sophomore Ethan Gross, and many other musicians.

One of the soloists, Sophomore Ethan Gross felt that the solos went well. Gross loves jazz music and started playing tenor saxophone this year, which he used to perform two solos. “I think the concert went really well,” Gross stated and he wasn’t the only one. After every solo or song that crowd gave a standing ovation. During songs people could be seen nodding their head to the beat of the music. “I thought it was a little awkward at the beginning, but they had a pretty good reaction to all the songs,” Sarah Davis stated. Davis has been playing the clarinet for about four or five years, and she enjoys jazz music. She had one solo in the first song they performed.

Jazz is loved and played by a lot of other band students as well. The next time Seymour will see the jazz band is at the Christmas concert on December 7th. They will be first up to supply the audience with another great performance filled with jazzy Christmas cheer.
