The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. It is most commonly celebrated on December 25. The actual month and date of Jesus’s birth is unknown. In the fourth century, December 25 was adopted as the date by the Western Christian Church.

It is a religious and cultural celebration celebrated by billions of people around the world. The holiday is celebrated by mostly Christians, but also many non-Christians. Families get together and open presents, eat dinner,  some people go to church services, complete an advent calendar, go caroling, look at Christmas lights, or decorate Christmas trees.

Families normally decorate Christmas trees with ornaments, and colorful lights, and tinsel. Some families get a real tree, while others opt for an artificial tree. They most commonly used are pine trees. Families will then wrap their presents and put them underneath the tree until Christmas Day, December 25.

Opening presents is a common practice celebrated by many households that follow the Christmas tradition. Another Christmas tradition is the legend of Santa Claus. Santa is said to be a jolly man with a red suit, a big belly, and a long white beard. He comes down your chimney on Christmas eve, (December 24) and he leaves presents underneath the tree for your family that him and his elves have made in the North Pole over the course of the year. Some families even leave milk and cookies out for him.

Christmas dinners are a large part of the holiday as well. Families come and gather together and have a dinner. A typical Christmas dinner for American households include things like ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, macaroni and cheese, deviled eggs, stuffing, cornbread, pumpkin pie and foods such as those, and whatever a family may choose to add. Families will typically eat together on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

Advent calendars are calendars that contain small numbered flaps, and you open one each day of Advent, usually to reveal a picture that is appropriate for the season. Advent is arrival of a notable person, thing or event. Families open a flap each day from December 1st, until the day of Christmas. It is typically done by children.

People also go look at Christmas lights that people put up on their houses. They also go Christmas caroling, where they go from door to door or businesses and sing Christmas music. Some families also go and watch and participate in their Christmas service at church. Many traditions are celebrated each year for the Christmas holiday.
