Videogames from a Nongamer’s POV

Theo, Marketing and Photography

As someone who only plays videogames when my partner drags me to play, my knowledge and skill of videogames is small. Below are quick overviews and my thoughts on some of the games I have played. *Disclaimer: I suck at correct terming on videogames*

COD:Modern Wafare 2 (2022)

The story depicts the acts of special forces unit “Task Force 141” throughout the world as they hunt middle eastern terrorist General Hassan.
First Person Shooter game.  One of the most recent games I  have played. Not my cup of tea due to being fast paced. Controls are easy to learn, but combos are harder.

Stray is a 2022 adventure game developed by BlueTwelve Studio and published by Annapurna Interactive. The story follows a stray cat who falls into a walled city populated by robots, machines, and mutant bacteria, and sets out to return to the surface with the help of a drone companion, B-12.

My favorite of this list. The story is sad and easy to follow with control prompts when stuck. The graphics are good and the cat is cute. Only complaint is I wish you could customize the cat you are playing as.

The purpose of the game is simply to build and explore (and survive).

I prefer creative mode to survival. You can build anything you can imagine. Animals are cute and graphics are all blocks.

Surgeon Simulator

Four friends decided surgery was meant to be for everyone and not just the rich and bourgeoisie. They set out to teach anyone and everyone who wanted to learn how to be a surgeon. They created their own medical facility but got a little carried away in their dreams.

Very stressful game, multi-player. Graphics are not the best and the controls are hard to use.

Resident Evil: Biohazard

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a 2017 survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. The player controls Ethan Winters as he searches for his long-missing wife in a derelict plantation occupied by an infected family, solving puzzles and fighting enemies.

Very scary. A lot of violence and suspense.

The Long Dark

The Long Dark is a first-person survival video game developed and published by Hinterland Studios. The player assumes the role of crash-landed bush pilot Will Mackenzie who must survive the frigid Canadian wilderness after a geomagnetic storm.

Slow pace. Survival game. Graphics and sounds are good. Some dead bodies and you have to hunt.

Outer Wilds

The player takes the role of an unnamed space explorer preparing for their first solo flight. After being involuntarily paired with a statue on their home planet made by the Nomai, an ancient and mysterious race that had once colonized the system, the player discovers they are trapped in a time loop.

Aliens going to space. Very cute aliens. Little side games to learn controls.

The central story theme is the “pursuit of the almighty dollar”. Missions follow the lead characters’ efforts to plan and execute complicated heists to accrue wealth for themselves.

Very graphic. Lots of missions. Not my favorite.
