* Disclaimer: This article includes one paragraph including my opinion. I haven’t taken either side of the conflict but agree with the campaign detailed below.
Since the beginning of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in October of 2023, over 30,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, while 200 Israelis are still being held captive in Gaza. This conflict is a polarizing issue in America, as the U.S. government’s allegiances lie with Israel even while many citizens have protested this support.
One group of concerned Americans, Artists4Ceasefire, has advocated strongly for a ceasefire on both sides. This group is unique in that it includes members from every realm of entertainment from Oscar-winning actors to pop stars (Some include Dua Lipa, Mark Ruffalo, Jenna Ortega, and Bradley Cooper.) Their missions? To “call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before another life is lost”(artists4ceasfire.org) No matter their own political or religious beliefs, these artists have come together to voice their support of an overall de-escalation of violence stating, “we condemn the killing of Palestinian and Israeli civilians” (artists4ceasfire.org).
This cause is a noble one. Across America, supporters of Palestine and Israel have voiced strong, opposing opinions that have caused stark rifts in the United States. Instead of focusing on one side or the other, the Artists4Ceasefire has chosen to advocate for peace. They have written a passionate statement to Joe Biden, the President of the United States, imploring him and Congress to facilitate an immediate ceasefire in Israel and Gaza. Their primary reason for calling for this ceasefire is the deaths of 12,300 children and 8,400 women, all unarmed civilians in Gaza.
I agree with the artists. There is no reason that these losses should be tolerated, especially by a government that claims to be the leader of Democracy and freedom. We as America have the tools, the resources, and the influence to bring an end to the war in Israel. By whatever means necessary, we must end this tragic loss of life that by any human standards is detestable and horrific. How can we allow the deaths of so many innocent lives? No reclamation of land or preservation of a country’s power is worth the deaths of children.
