In the past, researchers believed whale communication was similar to Morse code. However, new findings show that their calls may be closer to extended vowel sounds. According to linguistics professor Gáspár Beguš, these patterns reveal a level of complexity that challenges earlier assumptions about how whales communicate.

The study found that sperm whales use distinct sound patterns that resemble vowel and diphthong combinations. By exchanging these sounds, the whales appear to engage in a kind of dialogue. Although the clicks may seem simple to human listeners, scientists were able to identify more detailed structures once they analyzed the sounds more closely.

This research is part of the ongoing work of Project CETI, a collaboration that brings together experts in artificial intelligence, marine biology, cryptography, robotics, and underwater acoustics. Their goal is to better understand the patterns behind whale communication and eventually interpret their meaning.

Researchers believe this work could lead to a deeper understanding of sperm whales and how they interact with one another. David Gruber, founder of Project CETI, says that while progress will take time and continued funding, the potential for meaningful breakthroughs is real. He compares the current stage of research to early language development, where only basic patterns are understood but more complex communication may emerge in the future.
