After a long wait, fall sports are finally back at SHS. Here’s a preview of all seven fall sports.
Owls’ Soccer: After finishing 8-6-2 (4-2 Conference) last season, the Owls will look for another successful season. The Owls will be without their seven seniors from last season, but they have much to look forward to, including eight seniors who will lead this team through the ups and downs. Coach Dennis has become accompanied to winning, and I don’t expect that to stop this year.
Owls’ Tennis: The Owls have been consistently good every year, last season they had a 17-5 record including a sectionals win over Brownstown Central, but they ended up losing in the regionals to the second-ranked Columbus North Bulldogs. The Owls are losing Joe Schmidt and Drew Handloser, but are returning senior Parker Thompson and sophomore Carter Stein. Seymour Boys Tennis is good every year, you can expect another great season.
Owls’ Cross Country: The Mr. Fife-coached cross country team is coming off a solid season in 2023, where they qualified for the Evansville Regional. The Jablonski trio of Lucas, Micah, and Caleb Jablonski led the Owls last season. Losing key runners and senior leaders, Lucas Jablonski and Sam Baker, the Owls return junior Micah Jablonski who won the most outstanding runner for SHS, and they also return senior Ty Tormoehlen and sophomore Caleb Jablonski. You can expect another regional appearance this season.
Owls’ Football: The Owls finished with a 6-5 (4-2 Conference) record last season, while having one of the best offenses in the state, averaging 37.2 points per game. The Owls are losing star QB Bret Perry and star WR Jack Pennington, but they still have a promising roster. They will be led by seniors Jaylan Johnson, Mikey Wright, and Nicholas Wheeler. It will come down to coaching and strategy this season, so let’s hope for another good season.
Lady Owls’ Cross Country: The Lady Owls were consistently solid all year, placing in the middle of most races. The Lady Owls were led by senior Vivienne Siefker who qualified for the state tournament. While Siefker qualified for state, the Lady Owls qualified for regionals. The Lady Owls have a solid team returning this year, including juniors AnnMarie Shuler, Lyndsey Greenawalt, Lauren Dowell, and Kelly Beavers. This team has some talented runners and will be looking to replicate their success from last year
Lady Owls’ Soccer: Talk about a team that was better than their record, the Lady Owls finished with a 5-11-2 (3-2-1 Conf) record last season. Almost every game was super competitive but closing out games was the struggle of last season. The Owls will be without eight seniors from last year, but two of their three leading scorers are returning, including junior Katy Roark and senior Gabby Guzman. Joining the Lady Owls for her first season is senior Brylee Ramsey. Be ready for a breakout season from junior Katy Roark and the Lady Owls.
Lady Owls’ Golf: After a solid regular 2023 season, the Lady Owls were ready for Sectionals. The Owls traveled to Bedford to play at Otis Park Golf Course, where they would post a score of 421. Unfortunately, the third-place team would post a score of 418 which knocked the Lady Owls out of the top three and ended their season. Only Katie Cottrill made the cut for IHSAA Regionals last season. The Lady Owls are returning the same team as last season, which will help them over some teams that lost seniors. The Lady Owls are led by seniors Katie Cotrill and Emily Windley, junior Emmy Followell, and sophomores Shana Spray and Caroline Dennis, who is questionable for the season due to an injury. The Lady Owls defeated Columbus East on August 19 with Spray and Followell winning co-Medalist shooting 45 at Otter Creek. The Lady Owls are looking for golfers to join the program for the 2025-26 season. Contact Emmy Followell or Mrs. Cottrill if interested.
Lady Owls’ Volleyball: After finishing with a 19-15 (3-3 Conference) record last season, the Lady Owls would end up advancing to the championship of the sectionals to play against Floyd Central. The Lady Owls had already won two games in the sectionals to advance to this point, but Floyd Central would get the best of them. The Owls are returning a really solid team for the 2024 season, including seniors Greer Henry, Emerson Johnson, Claire Urbanski, Abby Followell, and Kenzie Gagner. The captains of this roster are Greer Henry, Norah Campbell, and Anna Fish.
