Seymour hires new wrestling head coach

After interviewing many candidates, Seymour High School named Andrew Wilson as the new head coach for the wrestling team. Wilson has been dedicated to wrestling since starting as a kid. He is an excellent choice for head coach!

When asked about how he feels about this promotion, he responded, “Excited, but also a little overwhelmed and nervous currently. I do not want to let anyone down. I really want this program to succeed, and I am going to do my best to make that happen.”

Some of Wilson’s goals as head coach include establishing a winning culture, having SHS be known as a “wrestling school,” helping develop student-athletes both on and off the mat, and leaving this program better than when he got here.

Continuing with these goals, Wilson also stated how he planned on reaching them, “First, I am going to develop a team culture through team-building activities. Wrestling is a tough sport, and you need help from everyone around you to [First] develop your skills, but [also] stick with it. If you have teammates around [Who] believe in the same [Goal], and are there to support each other, then the sport isn’t as hard; everyone is working together to achieve the same goals.”

Second, he wants to establish practice habits. As a coach, he wants to observe practice and help athletes improve their skills. He wants to make sure everyone is practicing the right habits rather than the wrong ones.

Lastly, Wilson wants to improve off-season workouts. He wants to create a plan for the off-season and have it available for all students. Wilson commented on this change, “Before this year, some kids didn’t even know there were opportunities to wrestle after the season. I want to change that. The best wrestlers in the state put in work during the offseason.”

As a wrestler myself, I believe Andrew Wilson will do amazing things with the wrestling program and accomplish all the goals he set for himself as a coach.

I’m Chase Koznarsky, a sophomore at SHS. This is my first year on The Owl, and I hope to learn from my new experience on the newspaper staff. This will be my 4th year on the wrestling team, and I enjoy swimming and hanging out with my friends in my free time.
