Shooting for Varsity

Grace Beach, Staff Editor

On December 2, the SHS Archery team held a faux tournament in the Aux Gym to determine the scores of individual archers in a tournament setting. At noon, the archers began shooting, knowing their scores would determine who would go to varsity, who would go to junior varsity, and who would get cut from the team entirely.

There were four flights (shooting sections) where everyone had the opportunity to shoot. A practice round followed by three scored rounds shooting at a distance of 10 and 15 meters. This tournament was decided by sign-ups, meaning the archers chose which flight to shoot in and didn’t choose target or side. Tournaments are usually much bigger so everyone shoots at once.

At 5:00, the ceremony for top 5 male and female archers took place, and trophies were given. All of the archers are collected together and 11 trophies are placed on a table. The top 5 guys and girls are called in ascending order by score. The best male and female archers’ scores are kept secret until they both have received their trophy. The “Best of the Best” receives a trophy for Best Archer overall.

Modest and humble junior Hunter Johns said, “I had two and a half years to help me do as well as I did.” Johns placed fourth out of the guys, and fifth overall, just behind junior Abby Wiggam.  Varsity and junior varsity teams will be posted on Tuesday December 5. The scores will be posted below, as sent to the archers.
