Zohran Mamdani has emerged victorious in the New York City Mayoral Election, defeating Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa for the privilege to be NYC’s fearless leader. Zohran Mamdani’s campaign for mayor has received a lot of praise online for its use of social media and authentic taglines to connect with younger voters. This technique is what some experts say won him the election. Mamdani promises to raise taxes on the richer folk in the city, expand on the city-run grocery stores, and freeze rent for those who cannot afford it.

Mamdani’s win starts a lot of firsts for the Big Apple. He is going to be the first Muslim and South Asian mayor. He is also only 34 years old, making him the youngest mayor in 100 years. As well as the impressive obstacles Mamdani has overcome in his campaign, with 2 million voters participating in this election, this is the largest number of voters present since 1969. 

Zohran Mamdani’s victory speech said a lot, but what was most important was his message to all his supporters and opponents: “To every New Yorker, whether you voted for me, for one of my opponents, or whoever felt too disappointed to vote at all, thank you for the opportunity to prove myself worthy of your trust,” Mamdani said. Additionally, he sent a response to Donald Trump’s threats if Mamdani had won, “So Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up.”

The future of New York City is in Mamdani’s hands now, much to some’s disappointment, but more importantly, to many’s grace. It will be interesting to see his interaction with New York City’s governor, Kathy Hochul, who has objected to some of his policies. Nonetheless, New York City shall be safe in Mamdani’s hands.
