February 5, 2025, was the 39th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The holiday is honored every February to acknowledge the accomplishments of women in sports. There are many fantastic women athletes worldwide, but there are several in our home state of Indiana, from the Indiana Fever to local high school lady athletes.
The most recognizable team is the Indiana Fever, with Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and coach Stephanie White. The 2024 Fever season broke records for being the WNBA’s single-season attendance record. Another professional sports team is rising to the spotlight, Indy Ignite’s impressive performance allowed them only to lose one home game for the season.
Professional athletes are not the only teams rising to excellence, our very own SHS Laby Owl athletes are showing their skills constantly. Lady Athletics compete in cross country, golf, soccer, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, swimming, wrestling, cheer, tennis, softball, archery, bowling, track, and unified track. Many students participate in multiple sports during the school year. The Lady Owls have had some impressive highlights this school year:
- Lady Owls Golf finished second runner-up at sectionals and 8th place at regional.
- Anna Fish was selected to join the Indiana South 3A/4A junior all-star team for volleyball.
- Emmy Munson was selected for the Cheatham Classic All-Tournament Team.
- Lady Owl wrestlers, Annmarie Shuler and Dhamara Aguilar, qualified for IHSAA Ladies State Tournament
- Lady Owls Swimming had an undefeated season, won the Hoosier Hills Conference title, and won sectionals.
- Girls Bowling won the league championship and finished second at sectionals.
- SHS Cheer team went to Orlando, Florida for nationals.
- Isabella Doyle, AnnMarie Shuler, Ana Rodriguez, Megan Stout, and Kelsie Napier qualified for the Wrestling Academic All-State team.
Professional, college, private and public k-12, and community organization teams in Indiana are striving to excellence on-and-off the field. Happy National Girls and Women in Sports Day!
