As winter break approaches, Seymour High School JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) members are stepping up to support classmates facing food insecurity during the holidays. With our winter break running from December 20,2 025, to January 6, 2026, students and their families often experience added financial stress from holiday expenses and the current state of the economy. To help ease this burden, JAG is organizing a schoolwide food and fund raising effort throughout December.
From December 1-20, the JAG program will host a canned food drive at Seymour High School. Students, staff, and community members are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to help stock boxes and bags of food that will be distributed to students before break. Additionally, JAG students will be sending flyers home to ask families to share donation information in the community.
To make fundraising fun and festive, JAG is also offering a holiday door decorating service. Teachers can decorate their own door or donate $5 to have their doors decorated by JAG students. The money collected will go directly toward purchasing food and gift cards for items such as meat, ensuring that every family can enjoy a warm meal during the holidays. Much like the Red Ribbon Week door decorating event earlier this year, this activity lets students get creative while bringing the school together (see examples at the end).
Students will also have the chance to vote for their favorite decorated door by placing spare change in each donation container. The door that collects the most money will be crowned the winner. If a teacher’s own students decorated the door, that class will win donuts as a thank you for their creativity and school spirit.
Once donations are collected, JAG students will spend time organizing the food into boxes and bags, which will be distributed to students in need. Those receiving food and gift cards can pick them up after school on December 19. Teachers and counselors are also encouraged to confidently refer students who may benefit from this program so that every need is met before break begins.
