Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is a highlight of Chinese culture. It began more than 3,000 years ago during ancient farming times, when people would celebrate the end of winter and pray for a good harvest next season. Many traditions come from the mythical beast, Nian (Year). Citizens decorate their homes with bright red lanterns to scare away the monster. Today, families travel long distances to be together; sharing large meals, honoring ancestors, and celebrating one of the largest festivals in the world.
In 2026, Chinese New Year starts on February 17 and marks the Year of the Horse in the Chinese zodiac. The zodiac follows a 12-year cycle, with each year represented by a different animal. People born in the Year of the Horse are said to be energetic, confident, and hardworking. During the celebration, you can expect parades, dragon and lion dances, fireworks, and lots of traditional food. Many cities around the world hold celebrations alongside China, which shows how widespread this holiday has become. This year, the celebration will come to a close on February 23.
